How to Fall Asleep In 1 Minute

I found out how to fall asleep in 1 minute!

I actually figured out how to fall asleep in 1 minute! For those of you who haven’t broken up with your sleeping pattern, you’re probably thinking “what’s the big deal”? But for me,  This is huge because for the last month or so,  my love affair with sleep has been almost non existent.  On average, I was able to get in maybe all of three hours of, restless sleep a night, once I finally conquered the task of actually falling asleep. I’m the girl with a million mental tabs open, who gets a flush of more ideas right around the moment I lay down.


It made it almost impossible to just get much needed rest, and of course, it started to take it’s toll on me. Lack of sleep also wasn’t doing much for my overall appearance when I was awake. My hair stayed in a bun, and my already hereditary dark under eye was super enhanced. I was a zombie.  So of course, in my sleepy frustration, I took to Pinterest in search of something that would help me to actually fall asleep without getting addicted to pills and potions; A sleepy addict just isn’t a good look for me. And of course, as usual, some loyal pinner came through, and popped this article online claiming she had a technique to fall asleep in 1 minute!?

One minute? As in 60 seconds? Um…Yes please!! My sleep deprived ass needed ALL of that! So I clicked the link and,  Omg,  heaven! (Insert Angelic harmony here!)

What It is?

It’s awesome, is what it is! To elab further,  the technique that allows you to fall asleep in 1 minute  consists of a technique called “4-7-8” breathing trick.

What you do?

You breathe! The 4-7-8 breathing method works to help you fall asleep in 1 minute and all you have to do is,  lay down in bed (or couch, or floor, wherever you sleep)  breathe through your nose for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 7 seconds, and finally you exhale out of your mouth for 8 seconds. That’s it, that’s all!  and it worked like a charm. I couldn’t believe that breathing like that, helped me to fall asleep at all, not to mention in 1 minute. So crazy!

Why it works?

I couldn’t understand though, why would breathing help me to fall asleep in 1 minute? I mean I had been breathing and had been having issues falling asleep forever, so what was different about the 4-7-8 method? Well the reason why it works is because breathing at such a calculated pace, and focusing on the direction of your breathing while concentrating, starts to cause your heart to slow down, and when you’re anxious, or stressed, like I have been, technically you’re under-breathing because you’re breathing more shallowly.

“By extending your inhale to a count of four, you are forcing yourself to take in more oxygen, allowing the oxygen to affect your bloodstream by holding your breath for seven seconds, and then emitting carbon dioxide from your lungs by exhaling steadily for eight seconds. The technique will effectively slow your heart rate and increase oxygen in your bloodstream, and may even make you feel slightly lightheaded which contributes to the mild sedative-like effect. It will instantly relax your heart, mind, and overall central nervous system because you are controlling the breath versus continuing to breathe short, shallow gasps of air.” {via}

When To use it?

When you need to get to sleep! The  4-7-8 method works very fast, so you should make sure that you actually are able to follow up with sleeping once you do it.  The coolest thing about this trick, is that you can use it anytime you need to get rest, and fall asleep in 1 minute to get it because it’s so important for your overall health to get proper amounts of sleep every night. This breathing technique, can be taken with you when you travel, when you’re all hyped up after work or a long day, and my favorite, because I do this a lot, when you wake up in the middle of the night and cant get back to sleep. Just start to use the 4-7-8 method, and you’ll be sure to fall asleep in 1 minute just like it’s nothing! it’s THAT awesome!

When I first tried it, I of course over thought it to death. “Will it work”, “Is it okay to be doing this” “Am I forcing myself to pass out” etc. etc. So, needless to say I wasn’t able to fully calm down. So I took a shower to relax, drenched myself in coconut and lavender oils on my hair and skin, turned off all of my electronics (they’re part of the insomnia cause), covered my eyes with my sleep mask, laid down and started to breathe through my nose for 4 seconds. Needless to say, I guess I did fall asleep in 1 minute because I don’t think I remember much after that. The next thing I knew, it was morning, and I was actually waking up feeling rested!  Not the norm for mama! So I am very impressed and happy that I learned how to fall asleep in 1 minute, and without drugs that keep me groggy and cloudy headed all day.
