Working from home? You need these 5 must-have tools to stay focused on your business and get things done.

must have tools to stay focused

I know, I know. People think that working from home, where you’re comfortable and in your own domain, is a piece of cake and so much easier than working from a cubicle.

Am I right?

Sounds real cute!.. but couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, working from home just inches away from all things distracting, like your bed, the T.V., snacks, etc. can make it hard to stay focused. After working at a corporate 9 to 5 for years, I had to readjust to the work from home life after being laid off. There was no boss micromanaging my work. No one watching my time. No one telling us what to wear. Nope. My sister and I were the owners and we could do whatever TF we wanted.

For a while, laying around wearing our fave cozy work from home wear until noon, and binge-watching Netflix was cool. But we quickly realized that if we wanted to grow our business and make money, we needed to create structure and focus.

It took a minute to create a functional system, but in order to get through daily tasks effectively, there are 5 tools that we can’t live without. If you’re looking to work from home and need a little more structure in your day to day life, check out the exact 5 must-have tools you need to stay focused in your business and get shit done… even if you’re working from bed.

content calendar - tools to stay producitve in your buisness

1. Content Calendar- Tools to stay focused on your business

Using a content calendar to stay focused on your business while working from home is so essential. When created correctly, your calendar can help you to follow a content strategy for social media, your blog, video, and even your podcast. Instead of wondering “what should I write about” or “what should I post” you can refer to your content calendar to keep you prepared. And this way you can focus on the content that you will be executing for the day, week, or an entire month. To create your own content calendar, use a dry erase wall calendar like this one to structure your strategy. Or, go digital and use Google Calendar or Asana to work with your team.

2. Distraction Blocker

If you’re anything like me, resisting the urge to scroll Instagram or hop on the Houseparty app with my quarantine besties can be hard to resist. It’s a must that I use a distraction blocker app to keep me focused on my tasks. My go-to app is Freedom.to because it’s an all in one distraction blocker that stops me from opening applications that steal my focus. So, whether you’re using your laptop or your iPhone, distraction blockers are must-have tools to stay focused on your business and be productive.

batching content - tools to stay productive in your business - the bed head society

3. Batch your content

One of the fastest ways to get nothing done is to try to do it all at once. Give yourself a break and instead, chunk your content creation into a technique called “batching.” Batching is the idea of taking like work, (i.e. Instagram content, Blog writing, emails, etc.) and only choosing one category at a time. Batching is a technique from the heavens, you guys! By using this practice, you will find you’re able to get more done and while stressing less. Separate your days into “Batching Days” and work to get more done across the board.

4. Use an Automation Tool

We’re all about working smarter so you can chill harder. This is why we are in all the love with automation tools. They’re the perfect tools to stay focused on your business while working from home. Think of a tool that serves to do the work for you. When it comes to social media, we schedule content using the Later app and allow it to magically post to the platform automatically. You can also preschedule blog posts on WordPress and pre-plan your email content to post on time through Kajabi. The idea is to use as many automation tools as possible to help you get more done even when you’re chilling in bed watching Netflix.

timer - tools to stay productive

5. Use a Timer

Use, and I can’t express this enough, A freaking timer! A timer is one of the biggest must-have tools to stay focused in your business, Sis. Working from home can be a huge distraction if you’re not careful. If you’re like me and have serious squirrel brain (“ooh look, it’s a bird”) you definitely need to use a timer like this one (also the one we use) to set it, focus on your tasks, and don’t stop until you hear the ding. We find that working in uninterrupted blocks2-hour to 2-hour increments helps us get so much more done.  When used along with a distraction blocker like discussed earlier, staying focused on your business is easily achieved.
