Get Organized – 7 Items You Need to Declutter Your Bedroom Closet Marie Kondo Style and Make Money Doing It
Get your Declutter on and Spark Joy
Items to Declutter your Bedroom Closet:
Spring is here y’all. And you know what that means? It’s time to spring clean and get organized. I’m channeling my inner Marie Kondo and decluttering my life. Because I work from home, and my bedroom and office space are shared, keeping it neat is crucial. Not only does having a tidy bedroom and workspace look and feel awesome, but it’s also especially healthy for sound peace of mind.
As a female entrepreneur, I’m busy AF, which means I sometimes fall short in keeping my bedroom organized (hello office chair beneath the pile of clean clothes). I decided it’s definitely time to purge and get rid of the items that no longer “spark joy” in my life. For me, this means parting ways with some expensive items from my denim collection and cutting back on my plethora of feminist tees.
I’m all for donating some items, but also love using apps that allow me to make money as a quick side hustle, selling some of the more valuable pieces (more on that below). I’ve researched and found the best items to declutter your small bedroom in a Konmari-ish type of way. Read on, and snag the best items to help you declutter your bedroom closet; Marie Kondo approved of course.
Taking Inventory – The Purge
If you’ve seen her show on Netflix, Marie Kondo starts by asking you to pull all of your clothes out of your closet and drawers and sort them in piles of like items. (i.e. shirts, jackets, scarves, shoes… etc.) The idea here is to have you really take inventory of all of the stuff you’ve hoarded accumulated. Next, you’ll go through each piece and decide if you want to keep it or not.
According to Marie Kondo, part of the Konmari method is to part with items that you no longer feel “spark joy” for you, and keep the ones that do. I say, If you haven’t worn it, or used it in over 30 days, are waiting for it to come back in style, or are still trying to fit into it after a year, it might be time to be like Elsa from Frozen and LET IT GO.
Now that you’ve decided what you’ll keep, it’s time to start decluttering and organizing:
Stackable Clear Storage Boxes
Stackable storage boxes are a great way to store bulky, seasonal items like sweaters, scarves, and jackets. I love using boxes with a clear window to help you see what’s inside for easy accessibility. They fit perfectly on top of one another to store easily in closet shelves or cabinets. Snag a set of two here.

Hang It Like a Boss
I have a bad habit of hanging everything and not always in order. With a small bedroom closet, this always creates chaos because items get crammed in and lost between one another. Using a hanging system allows you to maximize the hanging space in your closet, and hang items in a more accessible way. Choose hangers for your bottoms like these, and for hanging your tops, like these. A dream for those of us without a huge walk-in closet.
Bag your Handbags
I’ve got a lot of handbags that definitely spark joy, but are not used as often. Using an item like this to store your clutches, and handbags in your bedroom closet. This will make it easy without all the bulk. Again, clear storage is the best for keeping your items visible during the times you do need them. If you’ve got handbags that no longer spark joy… sell it using the Poshmark app and pocket some extra cash!
Create an Area for Shoe Space
Sometimes shoe boxes can be a huge pain in the ass to store neatly. The boxes rip, and the size ratio can cause a waste of space. I invested in a shoe rack to help keep my shoes in order. It comes with 10 tiers and a dustproof cover for protection. Splurge yours here.
If you’re over your shoes, and they’re in good condition, sell them on apps like Poshmark or part ways using the Mercari app and let them spark joy for someone else while you put the extra money in your bank account!
Portable Closet
If your bedroom closet is really small, or even nonexistent, I feel your pain. When I’m living out of our NY apartment, the bedrooms are small and have no closet at all, so I invested in a portable closet. It has shelving and extra space with a convertible cover for privacy. Best investment ever. Snag it here.
Cosmetics & Jewelry
I’m not a huge makeup or cosmetic collector, but I love me some jewelry. I store both of them in bags or hard to access jewelry boxes. This can get annoying when I’m trying to search for something in particular. I recently purchased a few clear stackable storage systems for easier accessibility. Plus it looks so pretty on display! Get yours here.
Get some dollars for your bling with eBay and allow customers to bid your items up. (remember Sophia Amoruso of Girl Boss) or Join a community like Poshmark and sell without all the hassle.
Items to Declutter Your Bedroom Closet – Hooks
Sometimes a girl just needs a few good hooks to store her stuff. I love using them for light scarves and hats that I know I use often. Investing in a hook set like this one can even double as cute wall décor while giving you a place to store your items.
